Hazel – Corylus avellana

Hazel – Corylus avellana is a native British tree producing tasty hazelnuts. We source the trees in the UK to prevent the importation of diseases or none-native pests.

It is a deciduous tree and can ultimately grow to approximately 15 metres in height and live for about 100 years.

The trunk of the tree attracts mosses, lichens and liverworts. Also, in the soil below the canopy, fiery Milkcap (Lactarius pyrogalus) fungus grows and usually seen in the autumn.

The tree is extremely valuable to a range of British wildlife such as the hazel dormouse but also woodpeckers, nuthatches, tits, wood pigeons, jays and many small mammals. Early in the year hazel produces flowers providing pollen for bees and other pollinators. It also attracts the nut-tree tussock, large emerald, small white wave and barred umber.

Wood from the hazel tree was often used by water dowsers for their Y-rods. In mythology, hazel wood was believed to have the power to repel evil spirits. Because of its reputed protective properties, people often crafted staffs and rods from hazel wood to use as safeguards against malevolent forces.

Sapling size ranges from approximately 150 to 300 mm, or approximately 6 to 12 inches. These young trees are ideal for turning in to bonsai trees.
Sometimes, we may trim the saplings prior to posting to ensure they fit in the packaging.

Caring for your saplings.

When they arrive, they may need a little water. Plant in the garden where you would like the tree to grow, you may want to stake it, to ensure it grows straight.
