Cowslip

Description

Cowslip, often known by its scientific name, Primula Veris. Cowslip is a beautiful and pleasing flowering perennial plant, usually found in meadows and also woodland floors. We often see this plant is on grass verges on the sides of busy roads in places where you cannot stop to admire the flowers, such as motorways or dual carriageways.

Cowslip apparently got the name because it was often found in fields by cow-pats (cow poo).

It has bright yellow bell-shaped flowers from April to May. We find the flowers in beautiful clusters on each plant. Also, a light creamy-greenish vein is usually seen in the centre of the toothed edged leaves. After flowering the plant starts to die back ready for the winter months.

This plant reminds people of the beautiful British countryside. You can now plant a piece of the countryside in your garden to enjoy and attract valuable pollinating invertebrates such as insects and bees.

Does well in poorer soils with a little lime or chalky.
