Description
Japanese painted fern ‘Pictum’ also known by its scientific name Athyrium niponicum ‘Pictum’. A deciduous fern with stunning fronds, it is a native to Eastern Asia.
It thrives in full shade or partial shaded areas of the garden. The colourful lance-shaped fronds can vary in length between 20 and 60 centimetres. The fronds and also the midribs have a range of colours from greys to greens towards visually stunning reds and purples.
The fern grows to approximately 30 to 50cms high with a similar spread. It takes about 3 to 5 years to achieve the ultimate height.
Needs a moist but well drained sheltered position, and it will tolerate most soil types well.
The Japanese painted fern ‘Pictum’ is a wonderful addition to any garden where you need a stunningly beautiful visual impact.
The fern looks spectacular when planted at the base of the Acanthus Mollis plant or mixed with Common Spotted Orchids as part of a herbaceous border.
