Purple Toadflax

Purple toadflax sometimes known by its botanical name of Linaria purpurea is a vigorous perennial with narrow greyish leaves, growing between 0.5 m to 1 m tall. Also, producing purple flowers from early summer to autumn. It is tolerant of most well-drained soils and is happy in a sheltered or exposed position. It can be grown in sandy or poor stony soils.

Ideal for herbaceous borders, planted in the middle for the best flower show.

This is an easy to care for plant requiring little attention. However, it is best trimmed after flowering, because this can encourage more flowers later in the season.

The plant can withstand temperatures as low as -20 °C / -5° F. While it is rare for Britain to experience such low temperatures. It is, however, advisable to offer some protection for young plants. During their first year after planting, they should be protected from the winter cold with a little straw or similar. We never know when we will experience an extreme winter!

Instructions for packs of seeds.

Sow seeds in a seed tray during March. Prick out and plant early May.
