Description
Lemon Balm is a creamy-white flowering herb and scalloped edged leaves with a strong lemon scent. It’s scientific name is Melissa officinalis.
It is a herbaceous perennial plant which grows to between 60cm to 110cm and ideal for adding a nice scent to the garden or tubs.
Is often used in making herbal teas such as a lemon scented tea it is also added to fish dishes when cooking.
Some common uses for Lemon Balm.
- Making herbal teas, for example Lemon Balm and honey tea.
- Added to fish dishes.
- Used to add flavour to sauces or vinegars.
- Insect friendly plant.
- Used as a room deodoriser.
- Added to pot potpourris.
- Also, sometimes used in traditional medicines. (Always consult a doctor prior to making a traditional medicine from a plant)
It is claimed by some herbalists to reduce anxiety.
Keep well watered during dry periods. Trim back after flowering because this encourages fresh new growth.
It is possible to grow in a plant pot on a kitchen windowsill. It is advisable to keep the potted plant trimmed so it will keep producing young leaves.
